For those living with the incessant itching and persistent redness of eczema, any relief already represents an important change in their routine. Now, a new research brings hope based on cannabinoid medicine: an ointment with high concentrations of CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol) showed promising results in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, an inflammatory skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

The study, published in the scientific journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, followed nine adults diagnosed with eczema, who used the topical formulation for three months. Composed of 30% CBD, 5% CBG, hemp seed oil, and cholesterol, the ointment was applied on the patients' forearms always before bedtime, with the recommendation of using a wet dressing to enhance the effects.

The results? More than promising!

According to researchers from the Medical University of Silesia in Poland and De Montfort University in the United Kingdom, there was a significant improvement in clinical parameters such as skin hydration, sebum balance, reduction of redness (erythema), and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). In some cases, symptoms went into complete remission.

"Patients who correctly followed the protocol showed significant progress, demonstrating the potential of topical use of cannabinoids in caring for inflamed skin," wrote the authors.
The group also highlighted that even patients who had resistance to the ointment's oilier texture reported improvements, although less significant.

Atopic Dermatitis and Treatment with Cannabidiol

Atopic dermatitis is the most common, chronic, and recurrent inflammatory skin disease, which often impacts not only physical health but also the emotional well-being of patients.

Intense itching, lesions, and discomfort are symptoms that affect sleep, mood, and self-esteem. In the face of this, the effectiveness of a natural alternative with low risk of side effects, such as the combination of CBD and CBG, emerges as encouraging news for both doctors and patients.

The study acknowledges that the tests were conducted during the European summer (from May to July 2022), a time when the condition usually shows natural improvement, which may be a variable to be considered in the results. Nevertheless, the team believes in the clinical potential of the formulation, recommending studies with larger samples and more rigorous control of variables.

More Evidence of Benefits

Other recent research reinforces the dermatological benefits of CBD. Scientists from Thailand suggest that cannabidiol can act as an ally in anti-aging cosmetics and wound healing, while an American study indicated that lotions infused with CBD can reduce damage caused by UV rays on the skin.

And the benefits are not limited to humans: an article published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science observed a significant improvement in the skin and behavior of a dog with discoid lupus erythematosus treated with cannabis oil, thus showing itself as a viable relief alternative.

The sum of these findings points to a promising future for cannabinoids as therapeutic tools, both in skin care and overall well-being. For those living in constant discomfort due to dermatological diseases, science seems to be finally offering a light at the end of the tunnel to all.
