What is decarboxylation?
Decarboxylation is the key process to unlock the therapeutic potential of cannabis. This chemical transformation occurs when heat is applied to the plant's flowers, converting inactive acidic compounds into active cannabinoids. In simple terms, it is the moment when cannabis reveals its true medicinal power.
How to perform decarboxylation?
Decarboxylation is essential for medicinal and edible products, such as oils, tinctures, and gummies. The secret lies in precise control of time and temperature. Grind the cannabis and heat it to 110ºC for approximately 45 minutes. Avoid exceeding 120ºC to preserve essential terpenes. This process is crucial for activating cannabinoids, ensuring a faster and more effective response when consuming cannabis-based products.
What is the ideal temperature for the process?

The ideal temperature varies depending on the desired cannabinoid. Staying between 105-120°C is generally safe. Below, we present the ideal decarboxylation temperatures for some cannabinoids:
- THCA: 120ºC
- CBDA: 130ºC
- THC: 155ºC
- CBD: 165ºC
- CBN: 185ºC
Necessary materials
- Baking tray
- Parchment paper or aluminum foil
- Oven
- Cannabis
- Grinder (optional)
Instructions
Set the oven temperature to approximately 110ºC, with the oven rack in the center position. Ovens are hotter at the top and cooler at the bottom, so heating in the middle will ensure the ideal decarboxylation temperature.
Line the baking tray with parchment paper or aluminum foil and break or lightly grind the cannabis, but not too finely, to avoid burning. Heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring at least once. Let cool for 30 minutes at room temperature.
The cannabis should look slightly toasted and golden. When cool enough to handle, add the decarboxylated cannabis to butter, oil, or another base for infusion, or carefully place it in a storage container for future use.
Understanding these temperatures is crucial to maximizing the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. Decarboxylation is not just a process, but a bridge between the plant and its medicinal effects, unlocking a world of possibilities for health. By mastering this technique, you can enhance the therapeutic benefits of cannabis, paving the way for a more effective and holistic experience.
