São Paulo state deputy Eduardo Suplicy (PT) published an open letter on his social media to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, calling for attention to the regulation of medical cannabis in Brazil.

"As your companion in struggles for 50 years, today I bring up the reflection on a very important issue to me: the regulation of medical cannabis," wrote the parliamentarian, who revealed he has been using the oil for two and a half years to treat Parkinson's disease.

Suplicy expressed concern about the repression suffered by associations that produce and distribute the oil in a solidarity-based manner. He mentioned the Cannabis Santagaia Association, from Lins (SP), which served over a thousand patients and was the target of police actions, and the Flor da Vida Association, from Franca (SP), of which the deputy is a patient.

"I use cannabis oil with THC three times a day, and my quality of life, cognition, and tremors have improved significantly. As a patient, I cannot even imagine being without the oil," he emphasized.

The parliamentarian also criticized the lack of progress on the part of the federal government:

"Unfortunately, the promised deadline by the AGU and the Ministry of Health for the regulation of cannabis was not met, and now the consequences are extremely serious."

Suplicy reinforced that the dialogue between associations and the government has not been respected, and warned that the justice system has been authorizing violent police actions against these entities.

In the letter, the deputy made a direct appeal to President Lula:

"It will be consistent with our history in the Workers' Party to support the popular movement for medical cannabis and the democratization of access to this revolutionary treatment."

Closing the message, Suplicy reaffirmed his personal and political support:

"Aware of your sensitivity, always be sure that you can count on me in building a fairer, more supportive, and sovereign Brazil."
