Portugal stands out in the global cannabis market. The country has already exported about 26 tons of the plant since the legalization of its medicinal use in 2019. According to data from Infarmed, the Portuguese regulatory authority, this represents an increase of over 1200%.
Just in 2022, the last year with complete data, Portugal exported 9.2 tons of cannabis, marking a significant increase compared to the 709 kilograms sent in the inaugural year of legalization in 2019. This increase is attributed to the implementation of the law on February 1, 2019.

Infarmed reported that it is currently evaluating three requests for authorization for the commercialization of three substances and 12 cannabis-based preparations. This reflects a proactive approach to the evolving landscape of medicinal cannabis, highlighting the importance of rigorous evaluation and compliance with regulatory standards.
The exponential growth in cannabis exports positions Portugal as a key contributor to the global medicinal cannabis market. This evolution not only signals economic potential but also underscores the country's commitment to promoting advancements in the pharmaceutical and medical sectors.
