Keeping cannabis oil stored correctly is essential to preserve its therapeutic properties and ensure that it maintains the same effectiveness throughout its usage period. If you use CBD (cannabidiol) oil or any other cannabis-derived oil, it is important to understand that factors such as light, temperature, and exposure to air can directly influence the quality and potency of the product. A mindful approach to storage can make a significant difference in the effectiveness of the treatment.

Why is proper storage crucial?

According to experts, cannabis oil, when stored correctly, can maintain its properties for up to two years. However, if exposed to inadequate conditions, the product can lose its effectiveness in just a few months. When stored improperly, the cannabinoids – active compounds present in cannabis oil – can even decompose.

Lívia Teixeira, a biochemistry pharmacist graduated from the University of São Paulo (USP) and a medicinal cannabis patient, emphasizes the importance of taking care of the oil's storage to ensure its durability:

“I always store my cannabis-based products in a dark and cool place, below 21°C. This helps keep the active ingredients intact and prevents sunlight from compromising the quality of the oil. Additionally, I use opaque glass containers with airtight seals to ensure that air does not affect the potency of the cannabinoids.”

1. Temperature Control

Temperature is one of the most critical factors when it comes to preserving cannabis oil. Ideally, the oil should be stored in an environment with temperatures between 15°C and 23°C. When exposed to excessive heat, above 25°C, the oil can undergo oxidation and lose its medicinal properties. On the other hand, at very low temperatures, such as freezing, the oil can thicken, making it difficult to administer.

"In places with very high temperatures, one option is to store the products in the refrigerator (not the freezer), especially when they will be used for long periods. However, we must pay attention to the fact that very low temperatures can alter the consistency and viscosity of the oil and even precipitate some compounds. Therefore, removing the bottle from the refrigerator a few minutes before use and shaking it well can prevent negative impacts on the treatment. In fact, shaking the bottle before use is a recommended practice in all cases", the pharmacist reminds.

2. Protection from Light

Exposure to light, especially direct sunlight, is highly detrimental to cannabis oil. UV light can degrade cannabinoids, reducing the oil's effectiveness. Studies show that cannabis-based products stored in transparent containers or exposed to light can lose their medicinal properties at an accelerated rate.

Therefore, it is ideal to use opaque containers, preferably amber or blue glass, which block harmful light. Additionally, it is important to store the oil in dark places, such as cabinets or drawers away from windows, to avoid constant exposure to light.

3. Airtight Sealing and Protection from Air

Another factor that should be controlled is exposure to air. When cannabis oil comes into contact with oxygen, an oxidation process occurs that can compromise the integrity of the active compounds, such as CBD and THC. To avoid this process, it is essential to ensure that the packaging is well sealed after each use.

An important tip is to keep the oil in its original packaging, which has already been designed to preserve the product under ideal conditions. If you need to transfer the oil to another container, make sure it is airtight and opaque, as mentioned earlier.

4. Avoid Moisture

In addition to temperature and light, moisture can also negatively influence the quality of cannabis oil. A very humid environment can promote the proliferation of fungi and other microorganisms, compromising the safety of the product. For this reason, never store the oil in places like bathrooms or near sources of steam.

If you live in an area with high humidity levels, storing in containers with desiccants (like silica packets) can help keep the product in good condition.

5. Quality Factors and Extraction Method

The durability and quality of cannabis oil also depend on the extraction method used by the manufacturer and the quality of the ingredients. Oils produced by CO2 extraction tend to be purer and more stable, which can increase their shelf life. Additionally, products with natural and organic ingredients generally retain their properties longer, as long as they are well stored.

Always make sure to check the expiration date and follow the manufacturer's storage instructions.

6. Extra Storage Tips

Avoid frequently changing the oil from container. Contact with air during transfers can accelerate the degradation of the product;

Pay attention to the expiration date. Even with proper storage, cannabis oil has a shelf life, and it is important to consume it before this date to ensure its benefits;

Store in places away from heat sources. Avoid leaving the oil near appliances like ovens or stoves, which can cause an increase in temperature in the environment.

Properly storing cannabis oil is essential to ensure that it maintains its therapeutic properties and effectiveness during use. By following appropriate practices for temperature control, light protection, airtight sealing, and moisture control, it is possible to extend the product's shelf life and ensure that the cannabinoids remain stable. As Lívia Teixeira emphasizes, taking care of storage is a fundamental part for those who use medicinal cannabis, and it makes all the difference in the patient's therapeutic experience.”
