Those who live with pain know the challenges they face. Living with back pain, for months, sometimes for years, completely changes the routine, mood, sleep, and even the way of moving through the world.

Now, an international study published in Nature Medicine suggests that a cannabis extract can offer real relief for people with chronic lower back pain, one of the most common and disabling conditions in clinical practice.

A phase 3 clinical trial, conducted with 820 adults, evaluated the efficacy of a full-spectrum extract from the Cannabis sativa plant in treating chronic lower back pain. Over 12 weeks, participants received the product, identified as VER-01, or placebo, in a randomized, double-blind study.

The results indicated that the group treated with the extract showed a more significant reduction in pain intensity compared to the placebo, measured by the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS).

Furthermore, improvements were observed in aspects such as sleep quality, physical function, and neuropathic symptoms, factors directly linked to the quality of life of those living with persistent pain.

Clinical outcomes and safety

During the main study period, participants using the cannabis extract had an average reduction of 1.9 points on the pain scale, while the placebo group recorded an average drop of 1.4 points, a difference considered statistically significant by the researchers.

Regarding safety, the most common adverse effects were dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea, mostly classified as mild to moderate. Severe events were rare and occurred in similar proportions between the groups. The study also did not identify signs of dependence or withdrawal symptoms associated with the extract's use.

A promising path for chronic pain

Chronic lower back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and often responds limitedly to conventional treatments, which may include anti-inflammatories and opioids. In this scenario, the authors highlight the importance of therapeutic alternatives based on solid scientific evidence.

The study reinforces the potential of standardized cannabis-based medications, developed with quality control and evaluated in robust clinical trials, as a complementary option in managing chronic pain, especially in contexts where other approaches do not provide a satisfactory response.
