An organization known for opposing cannabis legalization has claimed to be financially supporting campaigns that, if successful, could end cannabis sales for adult use in the states of Maine and Massachusetts in the United States. The information was reported by MJBizDaily.
According to the Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) entity, based in the Washington, D.C. area, the group is providing support of “several million dollars” to popular vote initiatives seeking to end recreational sales in these locations.
The organization's founder and president stated that the movement is part of an effort to “reclaim our public health,” told the American portal MJBizDaily.
The mentioned proposals consist of popular vote campaigns that, if approved by voters, would result in the elimination of cannabis sales for adult use, maintaining access only for medicinal purposes.
In Massachusetts, signature collection is ongoing for the proposal to qualify for the ballot. In Maine, petitions have been authorized to gather signatures after approval by the state's attorney general.
In both states, legal cannabis sales for adult use amount to an estimated annual revenue of approximately $1.8 billion.
