The mandate of Padre Pedro Baldissera (PT) will promote, this weekend, two new editions of the debate in Western Santa Catarina with the theme “Medicinal Use of Cannabis”, as part of the Regional Seminar Series Cannabis in Defense of Life: Medicinal Use.

With these new agendas, the cycle reaches seven editions held or scheduled in different regions of Santa Catarina, expanding the dialogue on therapies with cannabinoids. At the meetings, the population will have the opportunity to hear researchers, healthcare professionals, and people who already use cannabis medicinally.

The initiative seeks to disseminate technical information and practical realities, with the aim of breaking taboos and clarifying doubts about the therapeutic potential of the plant. For Padre Pedro — author of the state law that guarantees the free distribution of cannabis-based medicines by SUS in Santa Catarina — the debate is essential.

He states that many patients who could benefit from the therapy still face access difficulties, and that it is necessary to guarantee the right to health and dignified treatment for those who depend on the medicinal use of cannabis.

The events will take place this Friday (28) in Chapecó, at 1:30 pm, in the auditorium of Block C of UFFS, and on Saturday (29) in Campo Erê, at 2 pm, at the Convention Center. Both will feature the participation of biomedical and neuroscientist Brunna Varela da Silva, founder of the Edma Institute, and neuroscientist Zuleide Maria Ignácio, professor and researcher at UFFS. In Chapecó, the mediation will be by Professor Maria Eneida de Almeida, a researcher in Collective Health, while in Campo Erê, also present will be Dr. Marta Werle Lunardi Gerber, a general practitioner.

Experts participating in the seminars point out benefits observed in treatments for chronic pain, neurological diseases, and debilitating illnesses. At the same time, they emphasize that the lack of easy access — whether due to bureaucracy, high cost, or restrictive regulation — still keeps many patients away from treatments that could improve their quality of life.
