In Canada, legal cannabis producers are adopting transparent packaging to replace flashy designs and allow consumers to see the product before purchase.

Change from the Top Down

In 2025, the federal cannabis regulatory body approved new rules allowing transparent windows on packaging for dried flowers, the use of multiple colors, QR codes, and larger formats for pre-rolls. This innovation opened up space for creative solutions, but with a more functional and secure approach for consumers.

Valhalla Flower, an artisanal producer from British Columbia, was one of the first to launch bags with a transparent window. The response was immediate: sales skyrocketed and some batches sold out. According to the company's operations manager, Sarah Tulloch, customers want to know exactly what they are taking home.

Avant Brands also bet on total transparency for the Tenzo line, a project conceived even before legalization in 2018. For the vice president of branding, Adil Hirji, showcasing the product is an act of trust and respect for the consumer.

The Other Side of the Coin

However, we know that not everything is about display. In the edibles segment, the new permission for “co-packs” - packages that bring together up to ten units of 10 mg of THC, brought practicality but also increased the volume of individual packaging. Walker Patton, from Woody Nelson, warns about the environmental impact and advocates for adjustments to reduce waste.

At store counters, the reception has been positive. Retailer Ryan Roch, owner of dispensaries in Alberta, states that transparent packaging has increased confidence and sales, especially in the case of buds. He emphasizes, however, that the strategy can be risky if the visual quality of the product does not live up to the promise.
