The Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS) has released a unique technical manual aimed at standardizing the dosing of cannabis oils. The publication was launched during the Cannabis Health Symposium, an event held in London.

The initiative aims to fill significant gaps in medical education and provide safety parameters for prescribers in the UK. Although medical use was legalized in the country in 2018, there is still a notable shortage of practical tools for clinical guidance on cannabis oils.

Guidelines for treatment with cannabis oils

Titled "Medicinal Cannabis Oils: Dosage and Guidance for Safe and Effective Treatment in Adults and Children", the document spans 189 pages. It brings together evidence-based protocols and real case experiences for the therapeutic use of cannabis oils.

The guide establishes clear strategies for the initiation, adjustment, and monitoring of treatments aimed at 12 health conditions. These include chronic pain, epilepsy, autism, anxiety, ADHD, multiple sclerosis, and sleep disorders.

Authorship and structure of the cannabis oils manual

The work was led by pediatric neurologist Evan Cole Lewis, assistant professor at the University of Toronto, and physician Rowan Thompson, vice president of MCCS. The material presents structured dosage tables to facilitate the prescription of cannabis oils.

In addition to the tables, the guide describes detailed procedures for managing adverse effects and assessing drug interactions. The focus is on implementing robust harm reduction measures during treatment.

Medical education and the use of cannabis oils

According to the organization, the release addresses a structural deficiency in British health curricula. The endocannabinoid system and plant derivatives are often marginally addressed, hindering understanding of cannabis oils.

The central goal is to enable professionals to prescribe based on solid technical data. This reduces the reliance on trial and error methods, ensuring greater effectiveness in the use of cannabis oils.

Future of publications on medical cannabis

MCCS stated that this manual is the first in a planned series to compose a comprehensive educational framework in the field. A second volume, focused on cannabis flowers, minor cannabinoids, and terpenes, is in development.

The current guide on cannabis oils has been made available in digital formats (PDF and eBook), with a printed edition expected soon. The publication is part of the medical society's resources, which already include a Good Prescribing Practice Guide.
