Alert: Health risks from accidental ingestion of cannabis gummies
Cases in Jamaica and Paraguay reinforce the need for regulation and awareness

In a world where cannabis legalization is gaining ground, concerns are growing around the risks associated with accidental ingestion of gummies containing certain plant compounds, especially by children. Recently, cases in Jamaica and in Paraguay have highlighted the dangers of this practice, leading to hospitalizations and prompting the urgent need for regulatory measures.

In Jamaica, children were hospitalized after ingesting cannabis-based candies with extremely high concentrations of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the plant's main psychoactive component. Meanwhile, in Paraguay, the discovery of psychoactive substances in candies, many of which are unregulated in the country, raises serious concerns about the quality and safety of products available in the market.
Dr. Flávio Geraldes, a neuropediatrician and president of the Pan-American Association of Cannabinoid Medicine (APMC), emphasizes the seriousness of these incidents and raises concerns:
"The accidental ingestion of cannabis gummies, especially by children, can have serious health consequences. THC can cause intense psychoactive effects, leading to temporary neuropsychiatric disorders," explains the doctor.
Geraldes points out that in addition to health risks, the lack of proper regulation contributes to the presence of adulterated products in the market, increasing risks for the general population.
“The issue with cannabis gummies is their similarity to traditionally sold candies in the market, making it extremely difficult to distinguish one from the other, even for an adult, let alone a child.”

The neuropediatrician further emphasizes that while these alternatives can bring well-being and quality of life to those who consciously use this therapy, gummies do not look, smell, or taste like medicine, which can lead to problems.
“The advice is to store this type of product in a safe place and out of the reach of children,” he concludes.
Therefore, it is crucial for lawmakers and health authorities to carefully consider the regulation of these products to protect public health. Education on the dangers associated with accidental ingestion of cannabis gummies requires urgency, with campaigns targeting parents, educators, and healthcare professionals, aiming to reduce risks and ensure safe use of these products.
