Traveling by car with a puppy can be like bringing along a racing heart. Between open windows and anxious looks, the ride sometimes turns into a challenge. It was thinking about this whirlwind of emotions that researchers decided to investigate if cannabidiol (CBD) could bring calm and well-being to pets on the move.
The study, published in the Frontiers in Veterinary Science journal, analyzed 54 dogs subjected to different doses of CBD, administered alone or in combination with L-tryptophan and α-casozepine, substances already known for their calming effects. The proposal was clear: to understand if the use of these compounds could transform the experience of a simple car trip into something less wearing for the animals.
What science found
Throughout the experiment, the dogs received specific doses of the substances two hours before a 10-minute car trip. During the journey, scientists collected physiological and behavioral data, such as heart rate, cortisol levels - a hormone associated with stress, and body postures.
The results were striking: although all dosages increased plasma levels of CBD, the combination of the compound with L-tryptophan and α-casozepine was the one that showed the most promising effects. In this group, a significant reduction in cortisol levels was observed when compared to the placebo.
However, researchers warn that the response to CBD still varies greatly among dogs, indicating the need for further studies to confirm its effectiveness and better understand how each organism metabolizes the substance.
Paths to animal well-being
Although the conclusions are preliminary, the study opens up possibilities for pet owners and Veterinary Medicine professionals. If proven effective, CBD could complement other care strategies, such as keeping the car ventilated, using appropriate transport equipment, and avoiding sudden movements, ensuring smoother trips for pets.
