The National Technical Biosafety Commission (CTNBio), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, has initiated the analysis of a regulatory classification request. The focus of the process is a product derived from a new variety of Cannabis sativa.

The procedure was disclosed in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on January 9 and refers to the variety named "Badger G". The request was filed by the company Rochedo Assets Participações Ltda, headquartered in Alegrete (RS).

Genetic characteristics of Cannabis "Badger G"

According to the published extract, the technical analysis aims to classify the product according to CTNBio's Normative Resolution No. 16. The variety in question presents specific genetic characteristics, differing from conventional Cannabis plants.

The official document details that "Badger G" was developed to produce high levels of cannabigerol (CBG). This substance replaces the presence of more common cannabinoids in Cannabis, such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Industrial use and safety of Cannabis

The company responsible for the request informed that the absence of THC and CBD directs this new Cannabis variety towards industrial use. The intention is to enable cultivation within the current legal requirements, focusing on an agricultural commodities production chain.

André F. Steiner, CEO of Rochedo Assets, commented on the progress of the process. "We are closely monitoring the regulatory procedures and CTNBio's technical analysis," the executive stated regarding Cannabis regulation.

Strategies for the Cannabis market

According to the company's management, the initiative aims to align the sector's development with international standards. Dalila Magarian, Director of Strategies and Expansion, emphasized the focus on legal security of the Cannabis project.

"The company is beginning a phase focused on structuring genetic licensing models, strategic partnerships, and attracting investors, with the goal of building a solid and regulatory-safe ecosystem," Magarian said.

The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation was contacted by Sechat Portal's report to comment on the analysis timeframe of the process. As of the publication of this article, the ministry had not provided further information on the case of the new Cannabis variety.
