A new study conducted in Portugal highlights the potential benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) in the post-operative recovery of cats suffering from feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS), a painful inflammatory oral condition. The research explored the safety and efficacy of an oral powder formulation of CBD over 15 days of continuous treatment as part of a multimodal approach.

FCGS is a debilitating oral disease associated with chronic pain, resulting in symptoms such as ptyalism, halitosis, weight loss, and decreased activity. While dental extractions may alleviate some symptoms, most cases require periodic treatment for intensity and pain.

CBD, a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid, has gained attention due to its therapeutic benefits, including anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. However, research on its use in cats with chronic or inflammatory diseases has been limited so far.

In the study, 22 cats undergoing dental extractions were divided into two groups, with one group receiving a fixed dose of 4 mg of CBD every 12 hours for 15 days, and the other group receiving a placebo. The results showed a significant improvement in pain chances and disease severity in the CBD-treated group, demonstrating that oral administration of cannabidiol may benefit the post-operative recovery of cats with FCGS.

The researchers emphasized that the protocol was considered safe, as no serious adverse effects or biochemical changes were observed during treatment. Additionally, CBD administration did not cause systemic impact or harmful adverse effects.

However, the study authors stressed the need for further clinical and pharmacological research to identify the long-term effects of CBD treatment in cats with painful chronic inflammatory diseases like FCGS. While initial results are encouraging, additional studies with larger groups and higher doses are needed for a complete understanding of its benefits.

This study reinforces the growing importance of ongoing investigation into the use of CBD in pets, opening doors for more effective and safer treatments in cases of chronic diseases in cats.
