The rapid aging of the global population raises significant social and economic concerns, driving aging-related research to the forefront. Therefore, aging healthily is the desire of millions of people seeking a better quality of life in old age. Now, a scientific review provides evidence that cannabis could be an ally in this process.

The study, published in the Journal of Cannabis Research, analyzed 18 researches conducted between 2008 and 2023, gathering results from experiments on animals and humans.

Findings in animals and humans

In animal models, cannabis compounds, especially cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), were associated with increased life expectancy, cognitive improvement, and reduced inflammation. However, in humans, the results were less consistent: some studies indicated protection against cognitive decline, while others suggested possible negative impacts on memory.

Promising with caution

Despite the observed potential, researchers emphasize that it is still early for definitive conclusions. The small number of participants and short follow-up periods in human studies require caution.

They highlight that cannabis may, in the future, be a tool for healthier aging, but it does not replace fundamental pillars such as balanced nutrition, physical exercise, quality sleep, and stress control.
