Combined sales of medicinal and adult-use cannabis in Ohio have officially surpassed the $3 billion mark. The information was confirmed by new data from the state's Department of Commerce (DOC).
In a recent update, the Division of Cannabis Control (DCC) detailed that the total in cannabis purchases in Ohio reached $3,036,756,851 by September 13. In the first 11 days since the market launch it reached $22.5 million.
The cannabis market in Ohio in numbers
Out of the total amount collected, around $2.2 billion corresponds to medicinal marijuana, legalized in 2019. The recreational market, started in August last year, already totals $802 million in sales.
Since the beginning of the medicinal market, 458,292 pounds of plant material and nearly 44.4 million units of manufactured products have been sold. Currently, the state has 165 licensed retailers, 459,408 registered patients, and 41,995 caregivers.
According to the DCC, the average price per gram of marijuana in the state is $6.55. In just the first year of implementation, recreational cannabis sales generated around $703 million.
Impasses in Ohio's cannabis legislation
Voters approved the legalization of marijuana for adult use in November 2023. Since then, lawmakers have been trying to revise the law, but the measure faces resistance and, so far, the legislature has not reached a consensus to significantly change the regulations.
Last-minute disagreements between House and Senate Republicans seem to have stalled the plan. In June, the House Judiciary Committee refused to advance a proposal already approved by the Senate, preventing a full vote.
In March, a survey from Ohio State University (OSU) revealed that local leaders were "unequivocally opposed" to previous proposals that could jeopardize the planned funding from the cannabis sector in Ohio.
