The National Authority of Medicines and Health Products (Infarmed) has requested the suspension and withdrawal of products containing cannabidiol (CBD), a substance derived from cannabis sativa, from the Portuguese cosmetics market.
Last week, Infarmed conducted an inspection and found CBD-based products distributed by the entities Wetaboxin and Drasanvi. As a result, the withdrawal of the products Wetabonix CBD Oil 7% and Wetabonix CBD Oil 15%, manufactured by Wetaboxin, was determined.
Drasanvi will also have to suspend the sale of the following products: CBD Body Balm, CBD Facial Cream SPF15, CBD Facial Serum, CBD Cream Gel, CBD Oil 3%, CBD Oil 5%, CBD Oil 10%, CBD Roll On Blue Rest and Relax, CBD Roll On Red Relief for Head Tension, CBD + 3 Clays, CBD Oil 20%, CBD Oil 30%, CBD Soap, CBD Broad Spectrum Oil 20%, CBD Broad Spectrum Oil 10%.
Additionally, it was determined to resume the suspension of the products Good Cannabis Cream and Cannabiron CBD cream, distributed by the company Dietmed. In September 2023, Infarmed had already mentioned the recall of these products, but the execution of the process was legally interrupted.
In Portugal, the use of cannabis derivatives in cosmetics is prohibited. According to Infarmed's statement, cosmetics cannot contain substances such as: Cannabis and cannabis resin; Cannabis extracts and tinctures; Leaves and flowering tops/flowers or fruits of the Cannabis plant.
Exceptions to this prohibition include the use of substances/preparations obtained from seeds of plants with THC content ≤0.2%, such as cannabis seed oil from varieties listed in the Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Species.
