The field of dermatology is undergoing a transformation with the increasing application of medicinal cannabis. For patients with chronic diseases, who often face treatments with limited results and side effects, cannabinoids emerge as a promising alternative.

According to Ludmila Militão, a columnist for Sechat Portal and active in the field since 2020, the potential of the plant for skin health is immense. For the specialist, cannabinoid therapy offers hope where conventional treatments encounter barriers. She reports the frustration of seeing patients with no response to traditional medications or suffering from their adverse effects.

“The use of cannabis in dermatology is highly promising, I like to say it's revolutionary. There comes a point where we don't see a response, we have to change the drug, and the medication brings side effects. To me, this is very frustrating,” says Militão.

The doctor explains that medicinal cannabis can act as an adjuvant treatment, allowing the reduction of doses of other medications and, consequently, their side effects. “Other times, I can completely eliminate other medications. Cannabis supports this anti-inflammatory therapy very well,” she adds.

Skin as a reflection of health

The effectiveness of medicinal cannabis in dermatology is based on the premise that the skin reflects the overall health of the body. Factors such as stress, diet, and internal inflammations manifest in the skin with acne, dryness, and diseases like psoriasis.

Compounds in cannabis, such as cannabidiol (CBD), have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and sebum-regulating properties. Studies indicate that CBD balances oiliness and improves hydration, being a valuable tool for various conditions.

Beyond CBD: other promising cannabinoids

Science continues to unravel the potential of other cannabinoids. A 2022 study highlighted cannabigerol (CBG) for its potent properties, even surpassing vitamin C in reducing oxidative stress.

More recently, in September 2025, researchers identified canabizetol (CBGD), a rare cannabinoid with remarkable antioxidant properties. Although studies are still in their early stages, the results are promising.

The challenge of medical knowledge

Despite the advances of medicinal cannabis, Dr. Ludmila Militão points out the lack of knowledge about the endocannabinoid system as a major obstacle. For her, events like the Brazilian Medicinal Cannabis Congress are crucial for disseminating information.

“The Cannabis doctor still works in isolation. Here, we understand what other colleagues are doing, discuss cases, and expand our networking,” she emphasizes.

She concludes by highlighting the urgency of integrating the topic into medical education. “If cannabis therapy exists, it is because of the endocannabinoid system, which is still not accessed by healthcare professionals, when it should be an inherent part of medical education,” she concludes.
