Orgasm, often treated as a taboo subject, is a fundamental part of women's health and well-being. However, for millions of women, it becomes a distant point, marked by frustration and silence.
Recent studies show that up to 72% of women of childbearing age face Female Orgasmic Disorder (FOD), a condition that goes beyond intimacy, impacting mental health, self-esteem, and even social relationships.
Cannabis as an Ally in Treatment
A review of 16 studies, analyzing data from over 8,000 women, revealed consistent evidence: cannabis improves female sexual function, especially in achieving orgasm. Among the reported results are increased frequency, intensity, and quality, as well as greater satisfaction and even the possibility of multiple orgasms. In light of this, experts suggest that cannabis be considered as a first-line treatment for FOD, something unprecedented to date, as there are no FDA-approved therapies for this condition.
Health Policies and the Recognition of Pleasure
The recognition of FOD as a condition worthy of treatment is still a political and cultural challenge. Currently, only three U.S. states - Illinois, Connecticut, and New Mexico, include the disorder as a criterion for access to medical cannabis.
For experts like clinical sexologist Suzanne Mulvehill, the creator of the aforementioned research, this step goes beyond science: it is also an affirmation of the importance of female sexual health. As the authors of the review point out, ignoring the problem is neglecting not only pleasure but also the dignity and well-being of millions of women.
