In a curious encounter between plant and beehive, researchers from Chulalongkorn University in Thailand found that combining Cannabis sativa and propolis extracts can enhance antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, a step that reignites interest in natural therapies to relieve sore throat and respiratory irritations.

What the study found

Published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, the study evaluated, in the laboratory, the action of isolated and combined extracts.

Both showed activity against common bacteria, but the combination stood out by presenting an additive effect against Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, microorganisms often associated with throat infections.

The mixture of propolis and CBD also reduced inflammatory markers in defense cells, suggesting a potential use for mild inflammation conditions.

Despite the encouraging results, the authors emphasize that the research is still in the early stages. Animal studies, safety analyses, and clinical trials are needed to understand how, and if, this combination can reach therapeutic use.
