A flock of sheep surprised everyone by invading a greenhouse that cultivated cannabis for medicinal use near the city of Almyros, in Thessaly, Greece. The incident occurred after the passage of Storm Daniel through the country, when the animals were seeking shelter and food.

The owner of the greenhouse, Yannis Bourounis, jokingly commented: "I’m fine, but the sheep are better." He also reported the difficulty in getting them out of the place, adding that "the sheep were jumping higher than the goats."

Veterinarian and columnist for the Sechat Portal, Erik Amazonas, believes that these sheep experienced nothing more than a sense of well-being after consuming the plant rich in medicinal and nutritious properties. "The cannabinoids ingested, along with other compounds of the plant, such as flavonoids and terpenes, create a balance in the inflammatory process, providing physical and psychological well-being. Additionally, the plant's nutritional properties are rich and provide satiety for the animals," he explained.
According to Amazonas, this case can be compared to the euphoria of Dutch vacations when they are released in the spring, a behavior not observed in Brazilian vacations that remain confined all year round.

"I don’t believe the sheep experienced hallucinogenic effects, just a feeling of well-being. We can observe this with cats and dogs, who become more euphoric due to the therapeutic effects of the plant," he added.
CANNABIS IN GREECE
The unusual case occurred at a crucial moment for Greece. According to NewsWeeks magazine, the Greek government legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes in 2017. In 2023, the country inaugurated its first medicinal cannabis production facility. The cultivation of cannabis for medical use has presented much-needed economic opportunities for the country.
Storm Daniel resulted in the highest monthly rainfall ever recorded in Europe. Relentless rains wreaked havoc across the central region of the continent, causing landslides, destroying roads and bridges, and paralyzing water supply.
