Modern dentistry has increasingly advanced toward an integrative approach, where different elements of the body are analyzed together rather than in isolation. In this context, medical cannabis has been gaining ground as an important therapeutic tool for various clinical conditions. However, to achieve more effective and long-lasting results, it is essential to observe another aspect frequently overlooked by healthcare professionals: the balance of vitamins and hormones.

The human body functions as a complex communication network. Hormones regulate essential processes such as sleep, mood, metabolism, fertility, stress management, and immune response. Vitamins, on the other hand, participate in hundreds of biochemical reactions that ensure the proper functioning of cells, organs, and the nervous system.

Low levels of vitamin E and hormonal changes (such as during menopause or estrogen decline) are closely linked to an increase in oral problems. While hormonal drops reduce saliva and affect oral tissues, vitamin E deficiency impairs antioxidant defense, accelerating inflammation and hindering healing.

When there is a deficiency in nutrients such as vitamin D, B-complex vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and other micronutrients, various symptoms can arise or intensify, including fatigue, anxiety, cognitive changes, muscle pain, and decreased immunity. Micronutrient deficiency compromises the renewal of mucous membranes and teeth, leading to symptoms such as tongue inflammation and redness (glossitis), cracks at the corners of the mouth (angular cheilitis), canker sores, dry mouth, gum bleeding, and altered taste. Many of these symptoms are also present in patients seeking treatment with medical cannabis.

The relationship between cannabis and the endocannabinoid system is one of the main reasons why this integration is so important. The endocannabinoid system acts in maintaining homeostasis, that is, the body's balance. It is directly involved in modulating mood, sleep, pain, appetite, and inflammatory response. Likewise, hormones such as cortisol, melatonin, testosterone, estrogen, and thyroid hormones influence these same mechanisms.

When a patient presents hormonal imbalances, the results of cannabis treatment may not reach their full potential. For example, changes in cortisol production can impact conditions of anxiety and chronic stress. Thyroid disorders can interfere with energy and metabolism. Inadequate melatonin levels, meanwhile, can compromise sleep quality, even in patients who use cannabinoids for that purpose.

Another relevant point is vitamin D. Studies have demonstrated its importance for immune, neurological, and inflammatory health. Deficiency in this vitamin is extremely common and can be associated with symptoms such as chronic pain, depression, fatigue, and greater susceptibility to diseases, and may cause poor dental enamel formation and increase vulnerability to cavities. In many cases, correcting this deficiency in conjunction with medical cannabis treatment contributes to a more comprehensive clinical improvement.

This does not mean that vitamins or hormones replace medical cannabis, nor that cannabis replaces the need to monitor nutritional deficiencies or endocrine changes. On the contrary. The best strategy is to understand that all of these tools can act in a complementary manner within an individualized therapeutic plan.

More and more healthcare professionals advocate for a broad view of the patient, considering laboratory tests, lifestyle habits, diet, sleep quality, hormonal health, and nutritional support as indispensable factors to enhance the benefits of medical cannabis.

True personalized dentistry occurs when looking at the individual as a whole. In this scenario, the balance between vitamins, hormones, and the endocannabinoid system should not be seen as a coincidence, but as a powerful alliance in favor of health, well-being, and quality of life.

Medical cannabis represents an important therapeutic advancement, but its benefits can be expanded when combined with the assessment and correction of vitamin deficiencies and hormonal imbalances. Integrative care remains the safest and most effective path to promote oral and overall health sustainably.
