A resident of Novo Itacolomi (PR) who has been dealing with anxiety attacks for over 20 years has won the right to grow cannabis at home for medicinal purposes in court. The decision, issued by the 2nd Federal Court of Londrina in the second week of August 2025, recognizes the importance of the treatment for the patient and guarantees a safe-conduct, preventing him from being arrested or prosecuted for cultivating the plant.
The measure came after a habeas corpus filed by lawyers José Teodoro Alves, Tiago Mariano Teodoro Alves, and Renato Macedo, from Apucarana. According to the defense, although there is no support for large-scale cultivation, this specific case is treated as a health issue, since the patient is ill and, given the need, it is safer for him to produce his own medication at home than to resort to the illegal market.
According to the presented report, the patient has already been through various therapeutic approaches with no results. However, with cannabis, he has found significant improvement and is now receiving training to learn how to extract cannabidiol and produce his own medication.
Decisions multiplying across Brazil
The case of Novo Itacolomi is not isolated. Throughout the country, similar decisions have been granting patients the right to grow cannabis at home to treat severe and chronic conditions. In the Apucarana region alone, there are records of at least 15 people who have won the right to use cannabidiol in court, in addition to three other patients who already have access without the need for a judicial decision.
What is striking is the diversity of diagnoses that find in cannabis a real alternative for care: epilepsy, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, anxiety, and many other conditions that mark the lives of thousands of Brazilians.
In recent years, the Sechat Portal has been closely following this transformation. Cases like that of the man from the Federal District, who obtained authorization to grow the plant to treat chronic pain, or the patient from Rio de Janeiro, allowed to grow and produce his own oil for insomnia, show that the map of medicinal cannabis in Brazil expands with each new judicial decision.
