The global race to develop cannabis-based therapies with scientific rigor and pharmaceutical standards has reached an innovative milestone in Australia. Sydney-based biotechnology company Promethean BioPharma, led by Peter Comerford, has submitted an application to the Australian regulatory authority (Therapeutic Goods Administration – TGA) for the registration of an innovative isolate cannabidiol (CBD) tablet (THC-free), developed for pain management.

The initiative seeks to overcome historical barriers of bioavailability and standardization that still challenge large-scale medical prescription, marking the transition from the artisanal cannabis sector to traditional pharmaceuticals.

The Bioavailability Challenge Overcome by Nanotechnology

One of the major bottlenecks of traditional CBD oils and extracts is their low absorption by the human body: it is estimated that only about 4% of the cannabidiol present in conventional oils is actually absorbed into the bloodstream.

To solve this problem, Promethean BioPharma adapted a nanotechnology originally used in antibiotics and oncology medications. The process breaks down CBD into microparticles encapsulated with a carbohydrate-like structure, compounds readily accepted and absorbed by the body. As a result, the active ingredient's bioavailability jumps to an impressive 66%, providing the efficacy needed to create a dry tablet.

Clinical Trials and Promising Signs

The company recently completed a randomized, double-blind clinical trial involving 155 participants suffering from mild to moderate pain over four weeks. Although the overall result compared to the placebo group did not reach traditional statistical significance — a classic hurdle in pain research due to the strong placebo effect —, researchers identified a subgroup of "super-responders" (around 10% of participants) who experienced significant and sustained relief starting from the first week of use.

In addition to pain control in responders, the data pointed to meaningful secondary improvements in sleep quality, anxiety reduction, and performance in daily activities. With these indicators, the company aims to pursue fast-track or provisional regulatory approval pathways in Australia.

Toward the Maturation of the Pharmaceutical Cannabis Industry

For Peter Comerford, CEO of the company with a background in hospital management, the cannabis industry needs to mature its technical and scientific approach.

"Everyone in cannabis believes the plant is special. When you want something to be a medicine, you have to turn it into a pharmaceutical. You can't just cut the top off, squeeze the oil out and say: that's medicine. This needs to mature", Comerford said in an interview with Forbes Australia.

If the TGA approves the registration, Promethean BioPharma could not only capture a significant share of the Australian CBD market — estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars —, but also pave the way for mutual recognition agreements with global markets across Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Asia, establishing a new generation of safe, standardized, and pharmacy-accessible treatments.
