In 2024, Brazil surpassed the mark of 670,000 patients using cannabis-based treatments, according to data from Kaya Mind. This advancement raises an alert for the growing need for trained health professionals in this area.

According to a survey by Close-UP International, more than 48 million Brazilian doctors are now qualified to prescribe cannabis, a significant advancement compared to previous years. However, this number still represents a small fraction of the 575,930 doctors registered with the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM),

Pharmacist Dalla Colletta emphasizes that, in addition to prescribing doctors, dentists, and veterinarians, the cannabis landscape needs trained professionals to assist patients.

"We, health professionals, did not receive this training during our undergraduate studies. Although we have trained in various organ systems, the endocannabinoid system, which regulates all others, was not addressed," explains Colletta.

She highlights that by understanding how this system works, health professionals can modulate it in various ways, whether through medicinal therapies or not.

Endocannabinoidology Course: An Alternative for Training

To meet this demand, the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in partnership with the Dalla Institute, launched the fifth edition of the extension course in Endocannabinoidology. Aimed at health professionals, the course offers comprehensive training on the endocannabinoid system and its clinical applications.

With a duration of 180 hours, the course is entirely online, providing flexibility for participants to adjust their learning to their routines. Over 12 weeks, students receive complete training and, at the end, obtain an official certificate issued by UFSC.

Enrollment is open until February 28th. There is no limit on spots, ensuring an inclusive opportunity for those wishing to specialize in therapeutic management with cannabis.

The Importance of Training for Medical Prescription

Dalla Colletta emphasizes that the course has helped many professionals feel more confident in prescribing medicinal cannabis:

"Many doctors and dentists who participated in the course have become more secure in making prescriptions. Professionals who previously did not prescribe began to do so after the training," comments Colletta.

The course does not teach professionals to prescribe but provides a solid foundation that empowers them, not only to understand the endocannabinoid system but also to apply it safely and effectively in their clinical practices.
