Between episodes of anxiety, persistent pain, and sleepless nights, cannabidiol has become part of the daily life of many Brazilians. Extracted from Cannabis sativa, the compound acts on the endocannabinoid system, responsible for regulating functions such as mood, pain, inflammation, memory, and sleep.
How cannabidiol works in the body
By interacting with receptors distributed throughout the body, CBD participates in processes associated with physiological balance. Studies indicate that it reduces neuroinflammation, modulates pain pathways, promotes muscle relaxation, improves stress response, supports the sleep cycle, and acts as an antioxidant and neuroprotectant.
In refractory epilepsies, the compound is used to reduce seizures and improve quality of life. In daily use, it is part of treatments for anxiety, chronic pain, burnout, and sleep disorders. In neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, research is still in early stages.
The advancement of use in Brazil
In 2025, the country reached 873,111 patients in treatment, a growth of 30% compared to the previous year. The expansion is also reflected in economic performance: the sector generated R$ 970.9 million, approaching the mark of R$ 1 billion, according to the Medicinal Cannabis Yearbook 2025, produced by Kaya Mind.
According to family physician Dr. Carolina Rosa, three factors explain this expansion. “We are getting more information about the plant, managing to dispel some myths that have long been associated with it. The second is the increase in scientific research, in the last 5 years there has been the highest volume of scientific production in the field of medicinal cannabis. And the third is the expansion of access, with specific resolutions for importation, pharmacy products, and the increase of national associations,” she points out.
The role of cannabidiol in daily life
Patient reports indicate progressive improvements, such as deeper sleep, reduced anxiety, more manageable pain, increased concentration, a sense of calm, and reduced muscle spasms.

For Dr. Carolina Rosa, the changes are gradual. “The main change is often subtle: waking up less tired, feeling less pain throughout the day, and reacting more clearly by avoiding impulses. In chronic pain, for example, cannabinoids help reduce pain intensity and increase tolerance, acting at the level of the nervous system. In anxiety, they stabilize mood and reduce irritability and impulsivity. In sleep, they regulate the sleep-wake cycle, inducing sleep and improving its maintenance,” she explains.
Daily use, dependence, and safety
Among the frequent doubts is the risk of dependence. The doctor states that CBD does not cause this effect. “CBD does not cause tolerance or dependence. THC may present some degree, but it is easily managed by a doctor who understands the medicinal use of the plant.”
The doctor emphasizes the importance of proper monitoring. “Medicinal use is safe, with few or no side effects, and is always accompanied by a doctor. The risk of dependence is much more associated with unregulated use, without guidance and without monitoring,” she concludes.
