The use of cannabidiol (CBD) may be effective in treatments for reducing canine tumors. Known for its low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, hemp-derived products, a subspecies of cannabis, have become widely available, and their medicinal use in veterinary patients is increasingly common.

Despite the prevalence of use, veterinary literature lacks evidence-based resources that prove the efficacy of these substances. The most predominant cannabinoid found in hemp is cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which becomes cannabidiol (CBD) during heat extraction.

Studied for its direct antineoplastic properties, the compound, either isolated or in combination with standard cancer therapies, produced encouraging results, according to the study.

“The aim of the research was to explore the antiproliferative response of cell death associated with in vitro treatment of canine cancer cell lines using CBD in combination with common chemotherapeutics, as well as investigating the main proliferative pathways,” highlight the researchers of the article titled “Veterinary and Comparative Oncology,” published in 2021.

According to the report, cannabidiol significantly reduced the proliferation of canine cancer cells, proving to be better than the compound in its acidic form (CBDA) in five lines of canine neoplastic cells when used at concentrations ranging from 2.5 to 10 micrograms/mL.

“The combined treatment with CBD and vincristine (oncology medication) reduced cell proliferation in a synergistic and additive manner compared to other conventional treatments,” concludes the study.
