Brazilian researchers published a literature review in the Brazilian Journal of Health Review highlighting cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as good therapeutic options for treating Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Studies show that cannabidiol has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which can help reduce symptoms and improve patients' quality of life.
Alzheimer's, characterized as a neurodegenerative disorder caused by improperly processed proteins, affects vital functions of the nervous system and its main symptom is the progressive and irreversible loss of memory. The lack of effective treatments for Alzheimer's is a concern for doctors, patients, and families. Therefore, alternative strategies such as the use of CBD and THC are gaining prominence.
The review used articles published between 2013 and 2023 in databases such as the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and the Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). Out of the 197 articles initially found, 12 were considered relevant for the study.
Promising Evidence in Animal Models
Studies in mice with Alzheimer's revealed that treatment with CBD for eight months improved social withdrawal, facial recognition, and reduced neuronal inflammation. Another study showed that CBD helped in brain glucose metabolism and in preventing memory damage, both short and long term.
The Role of THC in Treatment
Hygor Cabral, a physician at the Ama-me association and researcher, emphasizes that THC also plays an important role in AD treatment. "THC can help control irritability and aggressiveness, common symptoms in Alzheimer's patients," he explains. According to him, the combination of CBD and THC, in personalized proportions, helps balance inflammatory processes and slow down neurodegeneration.

Additionally, this combination can improve sleep quality, which is often impaired in dementia patients. “Improving sleep quality, reducing anxiety, and controlling behavior greatly contribute to the emotional stability of those suffering from Alzheimer's,” Cabral adds.
In agreement with the physician, studies with human patients have shown progress in controlling agitation, aggressiveness, and improvement in sleep patterns. The combination of CBD and THC, especially in a 1:1 ratio, has proven more effective than the isolated use of each compound.
Safety and Few Adverse Effects
According to Dr. Cabral, the use of cannabis in AD treatment is safe, presenting only mild symptoms such as drowsiness and mental confusion. He also points out that cannabis can be used in conjunction with other medications, with few contraindications.
However, Cabral warns of the need to monitor the interaction with medications metabolized in the liver, such as cholinesterase inhibitors, which may have their effects potentiated or reduced.
