Cannabis-derived products, such as cannabidiol (CBD), may contribute to reducing aggressive behaviors in dogs, according to a study conducted by researchers in the United States, titled Long-term use of CBD and hemp supplements in companion dogs: associations with demographics, health, and behavior, published in the scientific journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Database of over 47,000 Dogs

The research used information from the Dog Aging Project, a citizen science initiative that gathers data on the health, diet, behavior, and environment of companion dogs. A total of 47,355 dogs were evaluated, with data collected between 2019 and 2023.

Profile of Dogs Receiving CBD

According to the researchers, 7.3% of dogs in the United States received CBD or hemp supplements during the analyzed period. Out of this total, 2,759 dogs (5.8%) were frequent users, defined as daily administration. The animals receiving the supplement were, on average, three years older than those who never used CBD.

Usage was more common among dogs with specific health conditions. The highest prevalence was observed in dogs with canine dementia (18.2%), followed by osteoarthritis (12.5%) and cancer (10%). Male dogs were 9% more likely to receive CBD supplements compared to females. The level of physical activity showed no significant difference between the groups.

Reduction in Aggression Over Time

Regarding behavior, the data indicates that dogs using CBD for several years were initially more aggressive than those who did not receive the supplement. However, over time, these animals began to exhibit below-average levels of aggression, suggesting a possible association between prolonged CBD use and the reduction of this specific behavior.

For other behaviors, such as anxiety and agitation, no significant changes were observed.

Study Limitations and Caution in Use

The authors emphasize that the study did not investigate the biological mechanisms involved or evaluate information such as dosage, formulation, administration route, or product origin. They also warn of the possibility of bias in the owners' reports.

Despite the findings, researchers recommend caution. CBD products can cause adverse effects, such as gastrointestinal problems and diarrhea, especially when administered in inappropriate doses. Choosing reliable brands is considered essential.

The study is presented as an initial point to deepen the understanding of the potential of CBD-based products in managing behavioral and health issues in elderly dogs.
