Cannabis-Scented Perfume Hits the Shelves
Previously, the smell of cannabis was not well-received; it was often considered unpleasant. However, beauty influencers are now embracing fragrances designed to highlight the scent of cannabis. For example, Dirty Grass, a perfume priced at $185, contains 500 milligrams of CBD oil derived from hemp in a bottle.
This is the latest release from Douglas Little of Heretic Parfum, the renowned creator behind entirely natural fragrances. The brands are joining artists like Cannabis Eau De Parfum from Malin + Goetz, which balances white floral notes with spicy herbs.
As cannabis gains more acceptance, both in legal regulation and public opinion, fragrance manufacturers are finding new ways to overcome stereotypes. Additionally, they are capitalizing on CBD in nearly every consumer sector, with products ranging from shampoo and gum to mascara and snacks.
According to researchers at Mordor Intelligence, the CBD market in the U.S. alone could be worth nearly $24 billion by 2023. Furthermore, the global fragrance market was valued at $52.7 billion in 2018 and is expected to reach $72.3 billion by 2024.
Linda Levy, president of the Fragrance Foundation, states that cannabis scents "seem to be very much in vogue at the moment." Members of the organization include Sephora, Macy's, and LVMH, and although major market players like L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, and Chanel do not have cannabis-themed products, it may just be a matter of time: "In the last two years in the beauty category, cannabis has become one of those real conversations."
One of the first cannabis fragrances on the market was Demeter's Cannabis Flower in 2006. The executive director of Demeter Fragrance Library, Mark Crames, created it to have "that grumpy cannabis smell."
"It's the true smell of cannabis modified enough so that it was easy to wear. I didn't want you to be pulled over for driving under the influence while wearing my cologne."
