The Governor of Delaware, in the United States, is celebrating the success of the first weekend of adult-use marijuana sales, with results totaling nearly $1 million in combined purchases of medical and recreational cannabis. Compliance checks indicate that the regulated market is operating in accordance with established laws.

During the three-day debut (Friday to Sunday), combined cannabis sales exceeded $903,000, reflecting strong consumer demand and a successful market launch. Recreational sales, totaling $625,000, are expected to generate approximately $93,750 in taxes.

Sales by county

Data indicates that New Castle County (with five points of sale) led with $432,319.78 in sales. Next came Sussex County (five locations) with $242,832.64, and Kent County (four locations) with $227,946.54.

“Delaware's first weekend of adult-use cannabis sales showed that our state is ready — and eager — for a responsible and well-regulated market,” said Governor Matt Meyer in an official statement from the Delaware government.

He also emphasized that the moment marks a commitment to economic growth, community strengthening, and public health promotion, as well as creating space for local reinvestments.

Safe and compliant operation

Established by the General Assembly in 2011, Delaware's medical cannabis program served as the basis for the current adult-use marijuana framework. According to the Government, the standards prioritize product safety, prevention of underage use, and responsible consumption.

Following the guidelines, state authorities conducted compliance checks over the weekend and confirmed that dispensaries adhered to regulatory directives. No significant incidents were reported. The stores demonstrated commitment to current legislation, including inventory tracking, laboratory testing, and customer identity verification.

“Delaware's transition to adult-use cannabis sales has exceeded expectations,” said Joshua Sanderlin, the state's Cannabis Commissioner, in an official publication.

Economic impact and tax revenue

The total sales of $903,098.96 represent a robust starting point for future tax revenue projections. Under current legislation, recreational marijuana sales are taxed at 15%, while medicinal products remain tax-exempt.

It is expected that the funds raised will be allocated to:

- Regulatory oversight;

- Public health initiatives;

- Community programs.

Next steps in Delaware's cannabis market

The Office of the Cannabis Commissioner remains committed to strengthening the sector. 64 conditional licenses have already been issued, with new authorizations expected by the end of summer. The state is also preparing to distribute Social Equity Financial Assistance Grants (SEFA) aimed at entrepreneurs from historically marginalized groups.

A comprehensive review of regulations is underway to ensure a safe, sustainable, and inclusive market.
