The Biortica Agrimed, a vertically integrated B2B company based in Australia, recently presented a brief summary of the laws on cannabis in Europe, revealing that 21 out of the 27 European Union (EU) member countries have legalized medicinal cannabis.
“The EU's situation regarding legalization can be best described as fluid but evolving positively,” said Tom Varga, CEO of Biortica. “Although EU legislation prohibits the commercial sale of cannabis, many countries are taking a more mature approach and initially legalizing medicinal use and ultimately personal use, with Germany leading the way. 21 out of the 27 EU Member States have legalized the use of medicinal cannabis,” he said, “and 13 countries have legalized or decriminalized its personal use.”
The 21 countries with legal medicinal marijuana are Germany, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, and Romania.
“The EU is made up of world-class nations, and Australia should learn all it can from this.” Varga continued. “We have the advantage, and indeed the privilege, of seeing how legislative frameworks have been built in other countries, what has worked and is working, and what the Australian industry and policymakers should avoid. Australia can do better.”
