Get to know the main medicinal Cannabis patient associations in Brazil

It was the patients and their families, organized in non-profit associations, who initiated the first discussions in Brazil about medicinal Cannabis, almost 10 years ago. Treatments, made in an artisanal way, began in the country through domestic and associative cultivation, illegally, or as those who work in these NGOs prefer to call it, 'peaceful civil disobedience'.

Although it is still not legal in Brazil, one of these associations has had authorization from the Federal Court of Paraíba since 2017 to cultivate marijuana and produce medication for about 2,000 Brazilians. It is Abrace, from João Pessoa. In addition to the northeastern entity, other associations provide oil, such as Apepi, from Rio de Janeiro, which is seeking the same rights as Abrace and has taken its activity to the Federal Court of RJ.

There are also associations that offer medical referrals or legal guidance so that the patient can seek access to medication through SUS or through health insurance plans. With the government's omission, these entities are multiplying throughout the country, now present in four Brazilian regions. Some of them recently gathered with the goal of creating a federation to represent the interests of patients in national political and legal matters.
