Cannabis is the most consumed illicit substance in Brazil, according to the 3rd National Survey on Drug Use by the Brazilian Population, coordinated by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Like any other substance, its consumption involves risks and benefits, which can be significantly reduced with simple strategies. In this article, we present some tips to make cannabis consumption safer.

Avoid Holding Your Breath When Smoking

The habit of holding the smoke after a puff to intensify the effects of cannabis is a myth. In practice, THC is absorbed quickly, and holding your breath only exposes the lungs to more toxins, increasing discomfort in the respiratory system.

Reduce Tobacco Use

Tobacco is highly harmful to health, mainly due to its damaging effects on the respiratory and immune systems. Avoid mixing cannabis with tobacco, as most of the harm from combustion comes from tobacco. Additionally, tobacco use increases the risk of nicotine dependence. Try alternatives like a vaporizer.

Use Cotton Filters

Unlike paper filters, cotton filters retain a large portion of the toxins present in tobacco, allowing THC to pass through and alleviating health damage. Prefer cotton filters, like those used in roll-your-own cigarettes, and if you choose cardboard filters, opt for those without ink and unbleached.

Avoid Efficiency Methods

Vaporizers are a healthier option than cigarettes, as they do not expose the lungs to high temperatures and emissions generated by combustion. Additionally, vaporization is more efficient, preserves flavor, and does not leave a smell. However, it is important to choose herb vaporizers instead of those that use THC/CBD liquids, as these products are not yet regulated, and their components may be unknown.

Cool the Smoke

If you use a bong, cool the smoke with cold water or ice cubes. However, this method does not allow for the use of a particle filter, which still exposes the lungs to toxic agents.

Prepare for Edibles

If you choose to consume cannabis in edibles, be aware that the effects can be more intense, psychedelic, and prolonged. The onset is slower (30 to 90 minutes), so be patient and start with a low dose. Avoid smoking while waiting for the effects and prepare for the experience by setting aside a few hours and ensuring you are in a comfortable environment, with non-cannabis snacks for when hunger strikes.

Prefer Products with More CBD than THC

The ratio between cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is crucial, as CBD can moderate the psychoactive effects of THC. While THC is responsible for the “high” and psychedelic effects, it can also cause anxiety. CBD, on the other hand, promotes relaxation and has antipsychotic and anxiolytic properties.

Maintain Hygiene

Passing the lighter flame over the filter or mouthpiece of the bong/vaporizer does not specifically disinfect. Follow the cleaning instructions for your device, wash your hands, and if sharing the joint, use a personal mouthpiece, which can be found in headshops.

These tips help make cannabis consumption safer, minimizing associated risks and promoting a healthier experience.
