In Deusa Cast, experts reveal the role of bacteria in cannabinoid production
Dr. Jimmy Fardim and Dr. Rafaela da Rosa explain how microbiota, endocannabinoid system, and cannabis connect in building truly integrative health

The relationship between microbiota, endocannabinoid system, and integrative health was one of the topics of the latest episode of Deusa Cast, a podcast from Sechat Portal.
In an accessible and scientifically grounded conversation, sports physician Dr. Jimmy Fardim and dentist Dr. Rafaela da Rosa explained how microorganisms inhabiting the human body play a decisive role in physical, mental, and inflammatory balance.
Introducing the concept of microendocannabinoidome, Dr. Jimmy Fardim emphasized that science is beginning to look at the gut as a true regulatory center. “We can no longer think of the endocannabinoid system solely as something produced by our body. Today we know that intestinal bacteria also produce compounds that communicate directly with this system,” he stated.
According to the expert, we are not just what we eat, but what our bacteria process. He also detailed how this “internal factory” works:
Anandamide and 2-AG: are the classic endocannabinoids that our body produces to maintain homeostasis (balance).
"Commendamides": this is the innovative term for cannabinoids produced by commensal gut bacteria. Dr. Jimmy explained that these compounds are distinct from ours, but act directly on our organism.
The Symbiosis of Health: if the gut is in dysbiosis (flora imbalance), the production of these “commendamides” is altered, impacting the entire human endocannabinoid system and, consequently, our physical and mental health.
Integrative Health as support and balance
Complementing the integrative approach, Dr. Rafaela da Rosa drew attention to oral health as an essential part of this balance. “The mouth is an inflammatory gateway. When there is infection or chronic inflammation there, it can reverberate throughout the body,” she warned. For the dentist, ignoring this axis compromises any broader therapeutic strategy.
She stated that cannabis emerges as an important tool in modulating these processes. “In dentistry, we observe benefits in both inflammation control and in managing anxiety, bruxism, and pain. This directly impacts the patient's quality of life,” she affirmed. She also emphasized that integrative care requires looking at the individual as a whole. “It makes no sense to treat an isolated symptom when the body functions as a network”.
The Deusa Cast episode reinforces the idea that the future of health involves understanding the interaction between the host and its microorganisms, integrating different areas of knowledge. Watch the excerpt from the episode that brought together the experts:
