A wave of speculation and humor was triggered when superstar Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James made a playful gesture and took a puff from an imaginary joint after missing a shot in a game against the Houston Rockets in the North American basketball league, sharing the moment with his teammate Christian Wood.
It also became evident that the NBA has evolved towards greater acceptance of marijuana, in line with broader social changes, such as the recent legalization of adult use in James' home state, Ohio.
Putting it in historical context, it is important to highlight the changes in NBA policies regarding cannabis. At the end of March, the league reached an agreement with the National Basketball Players Association to end marijuana testing and penalties for its use. The change followed similar policies already in place in professional baseball, hockey, and the NFL.
In this context, James' pantomime of smoking marijuana during last weekend's game, in which he scored 37 points, was more symbolic than transcendental and was not mentioned by the league. But that was not what journalists noticed.
The little controversy it caused reflects a cultural shift, said Jesse Washington from Andscape, recalling the times when athletes like Allen Iverson and Ricky Williams faced serious consequences for using marijuana.
LeBron James' actions signify a new era in which marijuana is increasingly normalized in sports and society.
“It doesn't matter that the marijuana was imaginary; it was a cultural moment that marks the passing of the torch in the United States,” Washington said.
LeBron James, known for his athletic stature and love for wine, does not necessarily advocate for the use or legalization of marijuana. His antics, Washington says, were more about entertainment and team spirit than a stance on the plant.
In addition to LeBron James, several former NBA players (such as Hall of Fame members Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Allen Iverson, Kevin Durantt, Al Harrington, Isiah Thomas and others) have openly discussed their use of marijuana and advocated for the legalization of cannabis for home use for years.
“I started smoking marijuana in college. During my sophomore year,” Iverson has stated.
Now a cannabis connoisseur, Iverson has partnered with Viola Brands, a cannabis-focused brand that has a line of products and marijuana items under the name The Iverson Collection.
