When it comes to cannabis consumption on the European continent, France is ahead of other countries in the region. Therefore, it is a shame that France is not leading the way when it comes to reforming harmful cannabis laws in Europe.
Especially, nations like the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy seem to be much more favorable when it comes to the possibility of passing the first legalization measure for adult cannabis use in Europe.

Strong support for legalization
When it comes to support for cannabis legalization, politicians in France are clearly out of touch with public opinion. To highlight this point, let’s take a look at the results of a recent survey. Over 250,000 people in France responded to a consultation launched by a parliamentary fact-finding mission.
The consultation took six weeks to complete and asked residents of France about their views on the legalization of cannabis for adult use.

Current cannabis policy in France
If someone is caught with a personal amount of cannabis in France, they are currently subject to a fine of 200 euros.
The French law decriminalizing marijuana that is currently in effect originated from an experimental program that limited jurisdictions implemented first to see if it worked, and as it was successful, it was implemented nationwide.

However, before the new law came into effect, individuals caught with a personal amount of cannabis were subject to a fine of 3,750 euros or one year in prison.
Therefore, decriminalization is clearly better than total prohibition, resulting in the incarceration of offenders who violate cannabis law; however, legalization of adult use is a far superior policy.
