Martín Rodríguez will be the new director of the Institute for Regulation and Control of Cannabis in Uruguay
After the departure of Daniel Radío, the Uruguayan government selects Rodríguez to take on the leadership role at IRCCA
The government of Uruguay has chosen Martín Rodríguez to serve as the executive director of the Institute for Regulation and Control of Cannabis (IRCCA), following the departure of Daniel Radío, leader of the Independent Party and former secretary of the National Drug Council (JND).
Rodríguez will assume the position in the coming weeks, as the company where he currently works is undergoing a closure and transition process, as reported by the newspaper La Diaria.
The future director previously held the position from 2016 to 2020, being the first to lead the department. Prior to that, he held various technical and managerial roles at the national level, both in the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Social Development.
In 2024, Martín Rodríguez participated in the Brazilian Congress on Medicinal Cannabis, where he discussed his responsibilities as strategy manager at Flextem Biopharma, a Uruguayan pharmaceutical company specializing in the research and manufacturing of cannabis-based medicinal products. During the event, he also addressed the evolution of the cannabis market in Uruguay.
Radío celebrated Rodríguez's selection through his account on the X platform (formerly Twitter), highlighting the appointment as a reason for "joy." He commented:
"Martín Rodríguez presented himself as executive director of the IRCCA for months after the start of my term at the National Drug Control Secretariat. It was not a surprise, as we did not raise several alarms. He was simply valuable. He held that position until he chose to retire voluntarily. I am very happy with the news of his appointment."
