In the past, marijuana was considered a substance used for recreational purposes. Fortunately, this view has changed as scientific research has shown that medical marijuana can improve quality of life, both physically and mentally. For example, a study from the University of Colorado concluded that medical cannabis is a valuable tool for promoting an active lifestyle in people over 50 years old.

As the legalization of cannabis expands globally and doctors seek new treatment options for their patients, researchers have been dedicated to exploring the benefits of the plant for the human body. Let’s briefly examine how cannabis affects the human immune system and its potential benefits.

How does medical marijuana affect the immune system?

Our immune system is highly complex, being partially regulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS), discovered in the 1980s. This system, primarily composed of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes, plays a role in regulating various human functions, including stress, mood, memory, metabolism, digestion, pain sensation, and more. The ECS is not limited to a specific area of the body, extending throughout the human system and also present in some animals.

Ongoing research aims to understand the ECS, how it works, and how it can be utilized in combating diseases and infections.

The three key components of the human ECS are:

Endocannabinoids: Small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors.
Cannabinoid receptors: Found on the surface of cells, they help regulate the immune system and are known as CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Metabolic enzymes: Responsible for breaking down endocannabinoids after their action.

Reduction of inflammation

Medical marijuana combats inflammation in the body, providing relief in autoimmune diseases and digestive issues. Additionally, it inhibits the production of cytokines, contributing to effective inflammation reduction.

Control of chronic pain

Studies indicate that marijuana may be effective in treating chronic pain, offering relief without the risks associated with opioids. Many patients see medical marijuana as a hope for living with less pain and less dependence on medications.

Before starting any treatment with medical marijuana, it is essential to discuss it with a doctor and obtain products from reliable sources. Research continues to uncover the various benefits of this versatile plant.

Just as medical marijuana helps reduce inflammation, it also plays a similar role in pain relief. CBD and THC interact with endocannabinoid receptors in cells, transmitting information to the brain and alleviating the sensation of pain through a natural analgesic effect.
