The advancement of science brings new hopes for those fighting obesity, a challenge that affects millions of people worldwide. In this scenario, two approaches stand out as promising: Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a cutting-edge medication, and medicinal cannabis, whose therapeutic properties have been increasingly explored. We spoke with nutritionist Dr. Paula Vinha, who helps us understand how these options can transform the health and well-being of those seeking weight loss.
Science
Approved by Anvisa in 2023, Mounjaro stands out as an innovative solution for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and its effects on body weight have drawn attention. In the body, it not only regulates glucose levels but also acts directly on satiety. "Mounjaro stimulates insulin release, reduces glucose production by the liver, and at the same time decreases appetite," explains Paula. The medication, by interacting with the hormones GIP and GLP-1, prolongs the feeling of fullness, resulting in lower food intake and, consequently, weight loss.

However, like any medication intervention, the use of Mounjaro is not without side effects. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common, especially at the beginning of treatment. "These symptoms tend to decrease as the body adapts," emphasizes the doctor, highlighting the importance of constant monitoring to avoid more serious complications, such as pancreatitis or hypoglycemia.
Natural approach
While Mounjaro represents the forefront of synthetic medicine, medicinal cannabis offers an alternative that is gaining strength due to its natural origin and the wide range of benefits. "Cannabis acts through the endocannabinoid system, which regulates various functions of the body, including metabolism and appetite," explains Dr. Paula Vinha. Among cannabinoids, two stand out in the context of weight loss: CBD (cannabidiol) and THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin).
CBD, known for its anti-inflammatory and anxiolytic properties, can be an ally in reducing stress and anxiety, factors often associated with weight gain. THCV, with its ability to decrease appetite and accelerate metabolism, emerges as a promising option for those seeking to lose weight. "THCV has a mild and brief effect on the nervous system, making it less likely to cause the psychoactive effects of THC, such as euphoria or paranoia," clarifies the doctor.
Choices
The choice between Mounjaro and medicinal cannabis is not simple and should be made carefully, taking into account the individual needs of each patient. While Mounjaro offers a more direct and rapid solution for controlling diabetes and weight, medicinal cannabis provides a more holistic approach, with benefits that go beyond weight loss. "Cannabis may have fewer serious side effects, but it also requires specialized monitoring to adjust the dosage and monitor interactions with other medications," warns Paula.
