National Basketball Association (NBA) players vying to represent Team USA during the upcoming Olympic Games must take a break from cannabis, both now and during the event itself.
The last cannabis test for NBA players was over a year ago, according to The Athletic. This happened when fan attendance and player socialization were restricted due to the pandemic.

But a hands-off approach will not be the case for members of the national team attending the Tokyo Olympics. Japan is a country that takes any drug-related offense seriously, as cannabis is illegal in Tokyo.
All 30 NBA teams will be tested
A memo sent to the 30 NBA teams this week makes it clear that all participants will be subject to testing by the World Anti-Doping Agency. This test - which will also be applied even when the person is no longer a potential player on the team or the games themselves are canceled - will cover substances, including cannabinoids, narcotics, and performance-enhancing drugs.
According to the International Olympic Committee, “it is the personal duty of athletes to ensure that no prohibited substances enter their bodies. Athletes are responsible for any prohibited substance or its metabolites and markers found in their samples.”

But in December, the league announced that the policy change would continue, at least in part, and that players would not be subject to cannabis testing this season.
