New Laws Expand Cannabis Market in California in 2025
Amsterdam-style cafes gain ground

Starting in 2025, changes in California legislation will expand opportunities for cannabis dispensaries and consumption lounges. According to EATER Los Angeles, Assembly Bill 1775 allows these establishments to serve food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as authorize live music performances, a move that could strengthen the legal industry and attract more consumers.
Amsterdam-style cafes gain ground
Inspired by the model of the famous coffee shops in Amsterdam, AB 1775 permits the sale of coffee, soft drinks, and snacks in cannabis dispensaries and consumption lounges. Before the new rule, these locations faced separate taxation for operating as a restaurant and as a consumption space. Now, businesses like The Woods in West Hollywood will be able to offer an integrated experience, combining gastronomy and cannabis in a social environment.
Live music comes to dispensaries and lounges
Another novelty of AB 1775 is the permission for live music performances in dispensaries and consumption lounges. Until now, cities like Los Angeles prohibited such events in these establishments. With the new law, the sector gains an additional attraction, increasing competitiveness against the illegal market.
Despite the legalization of adult-use cannabis in California since 2017, the industry still faces challenges, such as high taxes and strong competition from the underground trade. The relaxation of the rules could boost business and strengthen the sector, bringing the consumer experience closer to the European model.
