New study seeks volunteers to understand how cannabis can assist in the treatment of chronic migraines

In an unprecedented study in Brazil, 40 patients will be monitored by doctors and researchers for three months, aiming to evaluate the benefits and potential adverse effects of oral cannabis oil application in people suffering from chronic migraines.

According to the Brazilian Headache Society, about 30 million people, just in Brazil, suffer from migraines. Knowing this, the online clinic focused on cannabinoid therapy, Uidi (www.uidi.com.br), and the behavioral neuroscience laboratory at the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul) will conduct the research. Additionally, the study will have the support of the cannabis product company Natyva Care, a partner of this portal in the e-book: “Sechat Guide: Health, Business, and Cannabis Legislation,” and the patient association Santa Cannabis.
“It is very rewarding to contribute to providing access to a better quality of life through the medicinal use of cannabis. Who can participate?
Volunteers must reside in Brazil, be between 18 and 59 years old, and have a history of chronic migraine symptoms. The research leader, Dr. Rafael Bittencourt, a neuroscientist, reveals that the study will be a Prospective Cohort study
- conducted to investigate the natural history, subclinical and clinical aspects of diseases, and study various characteristics related to the transmission and maintenance of these diseases - and patients will be evaluated periodically.
“To register, it is necessary to fill out a selection questionnaire, from which data will be cross-referenced to choose participants according to health and socioeconomic criteria. The selected individuals will be monitored over 3 months by a multidisciplinary team and will respond to a series of self-administered questionnaires,” explains the doctor.

Bittencourt also emphasizes that the study's goal is to assess the patients' progress regarding symptom improvement, possible adverse effects, reduction of disability caused by migraines, improvement in quality of life, and consequently, a decrease in the use of analgesic medications.
Meanwhile, the medical director of the Uidi clinic, Laerte Rodrigues Júnior (CRM 105065SP), points out that pregnant women, nursing mothers, or those planning to become pregnant, as well as individuals with a history of intolerance to the plant's components or who have used cannabinoids in the month preceding the study, will not be able to volunteer due to research criteria.
“The expectation is that the definitive publication of the research conclusion will be presented in the first half of 2023,” says Laerte.
