Retired Woman with Alzheimer's Leaves Wheelchair After Treatment with Cannabis

By Caroline Apple

For 45 years, retired Docel Ribeiro das Neves, 65, has shared his life with fellow retiree Sonia Maria da Silva Neves, 67. During this time, the couple honored all their marriage vows; however, the promise to remain united in health and sickness began to be fulfilled in 2016 when Sonia was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and the family's life changed drastically.

At first, the retiree would forget a pot on the stove, repeat conversations, and neglect some household tasks, but soon the situation worsened. Sonia would take everything out of the cupboard and put it back more than once a day. In this process, she would forget where something was and would suffer. Keys and her cellphone were easily forgotten. The severity of the situation reached a point where the retiree would go to the bank to withdraw her salary but would forget and end up taking out loans, which she would soon forget she had made. To this day, the family suffers the consequences of these debts.

And so life went on from 2014 to 2016. Docel was very worried. His wife was not the same. Remembering it, the retiree's voice breaks. It was not easy, and it is not easy. Doctors attributed the forgetfulness to age. But Docel knew that something was very wrong. So, Sonia was taken to various specialists, and in the same week, she received the diagnosis of Alzheimer's. The retiree collapsed.

The shock has not faded to this day, as it was so strong to know that the person he chose to spend his life with, the mother of his children, the woman he loves and fell in love with, was now facing a grim prognosis of a living death, living with a disease that would leave her dependent and forgotten of her entire journey, her whole story.

Allopathic medication was the only option. Strong doses, several times a day to manage the symptoms of the disease. The loving woman they knew was disappearing and giving way to an aggressive and nervous person.

Then, Sonia ended up in a wheelchair. She could not stand. She had no stability. Her body trembled all over when she tried to take a few steps. Visits to the doctor became increasingly complex. The wheelchair became her companion inside and outside the house. At this point, Docel was desperate. His voice breaks once again.

Synchronic Cannabis

A spark of hope blossomed in the retiree's heart when his daughter-in-law sent him a video of Seu Ivo. Tears were inevitable upon seeing the same symptoms and behaviors of Sonia there in the video, but Ivo was reaping the benefits of medicinal Cannabis.

But the retiree did not receive support from Sonia's doctor. The professional who was following her stated that there were no studies and that at most she would be relaxed with the oil, so he did not recommend it. Then, Docel set an intention and decided that he would try to treat Sonia with marijuana at his own risk.

And life took care of bringing the solution. Without any idea where to start, a few days later, a friend of his son suggested that Docel treat Sonia with Cannabis because she treated her autistic son with the oil and taught the retiree the way to go, which he found synchronous. It was exactly what he was looking for.

On December 7, Sonia began taking Cannabis oil. Within two weeks, she started interacting with the family and standing more steadily. But on the 30th, the family suffered a setback. Sonia had a thrombosis in one of her legs and needed to be hospitalized for a week. Docel did not give up on the oil. He continued to medicate the retiree in the hospital.

At home, the treatment continued. The allopathic medication for Alzheimer's given three times a day in full was now administered only 1/3 at night, to improve the retiree's sleep.

Then came the big day. After just two months of using the oil, Sonia got out of the wheelchair, the newest retiree in the house. Sonia walks from one room to another. Today she plays, interacts, asks questions, and makes comments about what she sees on TV. Docel knows that she is not cured, despite the absurd improvement Sonia showed after using Cannabis oil, but the quality of life that the retiree has regained is undeniable.

Sonia continues to progress. Every now and then she calls her husband mother or father, but that’s it; Alzheimer’s is a powerful disease, but Cannabis can alleviate and help promote a more dignified life.
