The late NBA player Clifford “Uncle Cliffy” Robinson often stated that cannabis use can absolutely be part of an active lifestyle. Robinson knew from personal experience that his argument was valid, having played for 18 years in the NBA and being a cannabis user throughout his professional career.

Uncle Cliffy not only made rosters in the NBA, he was an elite player for nearly two decades. Clearly, cannabis did not slow him down. The same is true for countless other professional and semi-professional athletes in the international sports community, as well as amateur athletes around the world.

In fact, a set of two recent studies found that cannabis use was associated with a higher rate of exercise.

Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, and Cannabis

The first study involved researchers from around the world, including researchers from the UK, United States, Spain, France, Turkey, and Canada. The study design involved a cross-sectional analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The data for the study involved NHANES cycles from 2007-2008 to 2015-2016 and incorporated multivariable regression models. In short, data from nearly 16,000 people were involved.

According to the researchers' findings, “cannabis use was associated with higher levels of physical activity,” which other studies have also concluded.

Cannabis Use in Adolescents

The second recent study involved an international team of researchers affiliated with Florida International University (Department of Psychology, Center for Children and Families).

For this specific study, 387 adolescents were questioned about cannabis use and exercise, among other things.

The aim of the study was primarily to determine whether cannabis use and exercise had an effect on decision-making among youth.

The researchers tracked self-reported cannabis use and exercise and, as a result, found that among adolescents who reported cannabis use, exercise rates were higher compared to non-users.

“Contrary to hypotheses, adolescents who reported more exercise at the beginning of the study also reported a higher frequency of exercise in our sample. This association may be explained by factors such as sample characteristics or types of sports, but more research is needed to explore this,” the researchers concluded.
