In a live broadcast that aired last Tuesday (24), the general practitioner, Dr. Renan Abdalla, discussed the benefits of cannabis treatment for various diseases, including glaucoma, which affects about 1 million Brazilians according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

“We have studies showing the benefits of THC application in patients with the condition since the 1970s, and even though there is disagreement among some researchers, the results seen in practice are truly surprising,” Abdalla states, referring to a clinical case in which he was directly involved in the treatment of the disease.

The doctor recalls that an elderly patient approached him after trying several other ineffective treatment alternatives for her glaucoma. Upon learning about cannabinoid therapy, she showed a significant decrease in intraocular pressure, the main cause of the condition.

“In her tonometry test - an examination that determines intraocular pressure - the patient had a reduction from 17% to 12% after starting treatment with cannabis,” reveals the general practitioner, emphasizing the importance of the patient being under the care of an ophthalmologist during the process.

Abdalla was also asked about the use of cannabidiol (CBD), a compound that some researchers claim is not the most suitable for glaucoma. He justifies that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and that there are cannabinoid receptors in the cornea region, so he believes that its use was not harmful. However, he points out that more studies and research are still needed to prove his theory, as each patient may require individualized treatment.

Other topics such as the benefits of cannabis for patients with cancer and fibromyalgia, dosages, the establishment of the Renasce Institute of Research and Education (IRPEE), the lack of a subject on the Endocannabinoid System in universities, and the importance of being under the care of a prescribing professional for those who use this treatment alternative were also highlighted in this live broadcast.
