Study finds no link between high-THC marijuana and psychosis

Scientists from the University of Bath in England conducted a study on the effects of cannabis on mental health, specifically regarding anxiety, depression, and psychosis. While previous studies have suggested a weak connection between cannabis potency and depression/anxiety, the results of this research indicated that there is no significant association between a preference for high-potency cannabis or concentration of THC and psychosis symptoms.

The study involved 410 young people (aged 16 to 24) who used marijuana at least once a month for a year. Tests conducted after marijuana consumption showed no significant increase in the risk of psychosis symptoms related to high THC content. However, a weaker connection was identified between cannabis potency and depression/anxiety.

The legislation, sanctioned in May 2022, paves the way for the creation of a local production and commercialization chain or for export purposes of the plant, its seeds, and derivatives intended for medicinal use, scientific research, and industrial use. The measure is seen as a result of legislative consensus, stemming from an initiative of the National Executive Power, aiming to meet society's demands regarding the benefits of cannabis for various purposes.

The Argentine government shows optimism regarding the economic results of this new industry, estimating the creation of approximately 10,000 jobs in the first years. This number is based solely on the demand for medicinal products derived from the plant, intended for about six million potential users. Additionally, the government commits to prioritizing small and medium-sized enterprises, cooperatives, and regional economies.

One of the most notable aspects of the new regulatory framework is the definition of limits for the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in cannabis plants. The legislation considers "psychoactive cannabis" as those plants that have more than 1% THC in their chemical composition. This opens up space for the legal manufacturing of products based on this substance, as long as they fall within the established limits.
