The evolution of cannabis research in Brazil: impacts and new public policies
The development of the medicinal and industrial sector of cannabis through science and regulation

In recent years, Brazil has witnessed significant progress in research related to cannabis, driving both the medicinal and industrial development of this plant. This scientific progress has been crucial for the formulation of new public policies aimed at regulating and promoting the therapeutic and economic use of cannabis in the country.
The increasing number of clinical and experimental studies conducted by renowned institutions, such as the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), has demonstrated the therapeutic benefits of cannabis in a variety of medical conditions, from refractory epilepsy to chronic pain and multiple sclerosis. Brazilian researchers, including pharmaceutical, professor at Unicamp and Sechat columnist, Priscila Mazzola, have played a key role in this scenario. At the Brazilian Medicinal Cannabis Congress of 2024, Dr. Mazzola shared valuable insights on how this research is shaping the future of public policies in Brazil.
In addition to advances in the medicinal field, the industrial potential of cannabis has also been explored diligently. The plant, known for its versatile properties, is used in the production of a wide range of products, from textiles to sustainable building materials. This industrial aspect not only contributes to the economy but also promotes more ecological agricultural practices.
The creation of appropriate public policies is essential to support these developments. The regulation of the cultivation, processing, and distribution of medicinal and industrial cannabis needs to be meticulous and evidence-based. Initiatives such as the regulation of medicinal cannabis use in 2015, followed by the authorization of cultivation for research and production of medicines in 2019, represent important steps in this direction. However, there is still much to be done to ensure a regulatory environment that fully supports innovation and sector growth.
