The Role of Cannabis in Treating Chronic Diseases
How plant compounds help in managing pain, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis

Medicinal cannabis has been established as an effective alternative in treating various chronic diseases. Its therapeutic properties, provided by the active compounds of the plant - cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) - interact with the human endocannabinoid system, regulating important processes such as inflammation, pain, and motor control. Here, we explore three pathologies where cannabis has shown great efficacy, supported by scientific studies and clinical use.
1. Chronic Pain
Chronic pain, often resistant to conventional treatments, is one of the main indications for the use of medicinal cannabis. Studies published in the Journal of Pain and the journal Pain Medicine show that both THC and CBD have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the perception of pain in patients with conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain. Additionally, cannabis can replace or complement the use of opioids, reducing the risks of dependence and severe side effects.
According to a review published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, patients who used cannabis extracts reported significant relief in pain intensity and improvement in quality of life.
2. Refractory Epilepsy
Refractory epilepsy, characterized by resistance to traditional treatments, is another area where the medicinal use of cannabis stands out. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been shown to be highly effective in reducing the frequency and severity of epileptic seizures. Studies, such as the one published in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrate that CBD can reduce the occurrence of seizures by up to 50% in patients with severe syndromes such as Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut.
In Brazil, CBD is already approved by Anvisa for use in refractory epilepsy conditions, reinforcing its role as a viable solution for patients and families facing limitations of traditional treatments.
3. Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that causes damage to the central nervous system, resulting in debilitating symptoms such as muscle spasticity, pain, and mobility difficulties. Cannabis-based products, such as the oral spray Sativex (a combination of THC and CBD), are widely used in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom to treat spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.
A study published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal showed that patients treated with Sativex experienced a significant reduction in muscle stiffness and improved quality of sleep and movement. Additionally, the reported side effects are mild and well-tolerated, making cannabis a safe and effective option for this condition.
Although the effectiveness of medicinal cannabis is well-documented for various chronic diseases, it is essential that its use be done under medical guidance and in compliance with current legislation. Advancements in research and expanded access to quality products reinforce the potential of this plant in healthcare. With proper support, cannabis can offer a new perspective for patients living with debilitating chronic conditions, promoting more quality of life and well-being.
