Traveling? Understand How to Transport Your CBD

Find out which countries allow the entry of cannabidiol and how airline transport rules work for this product

Traveling? Understand How to Transport Your CBD

Despite a great deal of confusion surrounding regulatory practices and their association with cannabis, CBD (also known as cannabidiol) is legal in various countries. However, it is advisable to check the rules of each place before packing your bags. The products in question should not exceed legal limits of controlled substances such as THC - the cannabis compound that causes a "high" sensation in users.

Slowly, but surely, the world is once again beginning to open up for travelers. However, taking your favorite CBD products with you while traveling can bring a series of other complications.

Unfortunately, the question of whether you can take your favorite CBD products on vacation does not have a simple "yes" or "no" answer. There are several things you should consider before deciding to pack your trusted cannabidiol products along with your other personal care items and medications.

What is the law in your destination country?

While many developed countries have already introduced some form of specific regulation for CBD, there are several others where the compound is still restricted.

In Europe, most countries have lenient legislation regarding these substances; however, there are still some exceptions. For example, in places like Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova, and Slovakia, CBD is still classified as an illegal substance or falls into a legal gray area, making it better to avoid the risk. As a cannabis product, CBD is also not permitted in many countries in Asia.

In Latin America, countries like Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil already allow the medicinal use of CBD; however, some legislations require medical prescriptions, health authorizations from regulatory agencies, and specific quantities of each cannabinoid for entry into the country.

In the United States, 35 states have already approved the medicinal use of cannabis, although half of them limit THC content. Adult use is authorized in 15 states. American decriminalization stands out for its speed; two years ago, only 9 states had robust regulations on the subject.

Even in countries where recreational use is legal, such as Canada, there are strict rules stating that “the legalization of Cannabis in Canada does not change border rules,” and being caught carrying it “can result in serious criminal penalties both at home and abroad.” Therefore, it is important to evaluate the current rules in each country before taking cannabis-based products or medications with you while traveling.

Standard Airline Rules

If you are happy that your destination country legally allows the use of your CBD product, that's great! Just don't forget to take into account the normal flight rules! Although the 100 ml limit does not apply to medications, your product likely does not fall into this category.

Another important point is to always have a medical prescription on hand that justifies the need for use and ensures that the transport is solely for personal medicinal purposes; any relation to trafficking can cause problems. If you plan to take your cannabis medication on a trip, remember the rules and always stay alert to the legislation of each country. Otherwise, safe travels.
